What are the must-see places and activities in the neighbourhood?

An Evening at the Apollo Theater

Since its opening in 1914, this theatre has been a sanctuary of African-American culture. Yet, at the time, the entrance was reserved for whites!

The most famous of its evenings is the Amateur Night, on Wednesday nights. It's a radio hook night where many musicians and dancers take to the stage and leave at the audience's whim...

Ella Fitzgerald had won the competition, others like the Jackson Five went on to become famous.

The Gospel mass

Harlem is one of the districts of Manhattan with the most churches in the city where, as tradition dictates, Gospel music is in the spotlight. Among the many places of worship in the neighborhood, the best known and most popular with tourists is the Abyssian Baptist Church, located at 132 Odell Clark Place.

The First Corinthian Baptist Church (1912 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.) and the Elmendorf Reformed Church (171 East 121 Street) are also famous for their choirs.
